Cisco settles their lawsuit with Apple over the name iPhone

Big news of the day: Cisco who filled a lawsuit against Apple have agreed to allow Apple to share the name "iPhone" for their new upcoming mobile phone. But both companies wants to now explore on "interoperability" to work together to make the two technologies work together.

"The companies said Apple will be allowed to use the name in exchange for exploring wide-ranging interoperability between the companies' products in the areas of security, consumer and business communications."

Officials from both companies didn't comment further on the announcement.

"No other details of the agreement were released, and representatives from both companies declined to comment beyond their short joint statement."

Cisco whole filled the lawsuit last month in San Francisco federal court when they threatened to demolish Apple's use of the name "iPhone" for their new multipurpose mobile gadget. The Apple iPhone is planned to go on sale in June with a retail price starting at $499.

"Cisco has been using the trademark since last spring on a line of Linksys phones that make free long-distance calls over the Internet using a technology called Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP."

So what this mean for the Apple iPhone? Well Apple can keep the name and Cisco can now gain from the introduction of Apple iPhone by integrating their linksys iPhones and technolgy with the Apple iPhone and take the market-share with apple.

Apple iPhone Knock Off - Meizu M8

If there is someone good at mocking or as they like to call it reverse engineering things, it's the Chinese. From fighter jets down to simple toys, China always has been at the fore front of copying technology. But hey, you got to give it to them. They do a pretty good job at it. Anything new in the market, chances are there is probably a Chinese knock off of it already selling in Asia and it is no exception for Apple iPhone either. Take the Meizu M8 phone for instance, which with all due respect, is a nice looking piece of device but somewhat looks like the Apple iPhone.

According to some guy who appeared at Meizu offcial company's forum claiming to be the CEO of Meizu said that the M8 is not a copy of iPhone. In fact the company is trying to change the design so that it doesn't look an iPhone. But I don't see any evidence of that. Here are the two devices shown together…

Apple iPhone

What is iPhone?

Apple iPhone is a revolutionary multi-purpose mobile phone and perhaps the most anticipated mobile phone designed by Apple (the makers of iPod). Apple iPhone features widescreen display with touch pad controls (yes virtual buttons) and is as thin as a razor. Unlike any other phone in the market, iPhone features additional goodies like iPod for listening music and watching videos, Safari web browser for browsing the internet, Google Maps and satellite imagery, an email client for viewing and emailing HTML and Rick Text emails and widgets, small applications that give your real time information like stock market reports, weather reports, and more in real time. So in essence, Apple iPhone is a combination of three products into one, a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch pad controls and a desktop like internet device with web browsing, emailing and etc all packed into one small device.

Key Apple iPhone features:

iPod for Music and Videos

  • Features touch pad navigation for scrolling through music and video library
  • 3.5 inch widescreen display

Mobile Phone

  • One touch calling by simply touching the name or the number
  • Visual voice mail which allows you to go directly to any of the stored messages
  • Easy to use SMS application with a QWERTY soft keyboard
  • Featuring a 2.0 mega pixel camera with a photo management application

Stiff market for Apple iPhone - Wall Street Journal report

Apple is going to have to impress people with their new iPhone when it comes out in June in order to convince consumers to buy it. iPhone will be entering in a crowded and competitive market where most manufacturers already have phones which could compete well with the iPhone or have similar phones with similar features as the iPhone in works. For example, Sony Erricson's Walkman phones has music playing capability and have already sold 15 millions units world wide. With already so many competitors copying iPhone features into their own phones and devices, there will be some tough competition for those products as well. Like the LG VX8500 Chocolate which looks so much like an iPhone is already well established. Also, devices like the Palm and the Blackberry already have internet, emailing and touchscreen functionalities in them and are famous among business consumers. It may prove hard for the iPhone to take the market share from these big guns.

Stiff market for Apple iPhone

Cingular and Apple rippin' it up together

So it looks like the Apple iPhone will only be provided by Cingular with thir wireless service when it hits the market in June (is it only for the time being? That is still not sure.) Apple's CEO Steve Jobs struck a deal with Cingular's Executive Stan Sigman to have Cingular the exclusive supplier of iPhone with their wireless service.

"Mr. Sigman and other top Cingular executives were willing to cede control to Mr. Jobs and tolerate his digs at cellphone carriers, all for the privilege of being the exclusive U.S. provider of one of the most highly anticipated consumer electronics devices in years -- and to deny rivals a chance to do the same, according to people with knowledge of the situation."

But the deal has some catches, leaving Cingular on the giving end and apple on the receiving. When you subscribe for a wireless service from Cingular, the phones come with Cingular's company logo on them, howeve, the new Apple iPhone from Cingular will not have that. Cingular agreed on leaving its brand name off the iPhone phones. The deals also involve Cingular to share portion of the revenue generated from wireless subscribers with Apple.

"The deal also calls for Cingular to share with Apple a portion of the monthly revenues from subscribers, a person familiar with the matter says."

Apple is hopping to sell about 10 million units of iPhone by 2008. There are two different versions panned, a 4 GB version planned for $499 and a 8 GB version for $599.

"Cingular, which has more than 60 million customers, hopes the iPhone will give it a lift when it hits stores in June, at a time when attracting new subscribers is getting more difficult for all operators"

But really, are people going to cut their current subscription to buy a phone which will costs almost $700 bucks to buy and a subscription which could cost well over $100 a month? Ummm, I'm a bit skeptical on that and worried.
